Morwenna Ludlow: ‘We Believe…’ The Nicene Creed From The Fourth To The Twenty-First Century

Tuesday 23 September at 6:30pm in The Chapter House

In 2025 many Christian churches are commemorating the 1,700th anniversary of the formation of the Nicene Creed at the Council of Nicaea in the year 325. Morwenna Ludlow, who has spent most of her academic career writing and teaching about fourth century Christian theology, will briefly trace the origins and purpose of the Creed, before reflecting on its role today. What was a Creed for then, and what does it do now? What is a Christian community doing when they say ‘We believe…’?

Morwenna Ludlow is Canon Theologian at Exeter Cathedral and Professor of Christian History and Theology at the University of Exeter.
