Michael Stephens-Jones brings the season to a close with a rich programme of transcriptions and treasures.

Exeter Cathedral’s celebrated summer organ recital series draws to a close on Thursday 11 September at 7pm, with a performance by Michael Stephens-Jones, Assistant Director of Music at the Cathedral.

This final recital of the season offers a feast of transcriptions—ranging from the grand and celebratory to the intimate and reflective—showcasing the organ’s orchestral breadth and expressive versatility. While the programme includes a few nods to the Victorian tradition, it casts the net much wider, drawing on a rich variety of styles and eras.

The evening opens with W.T. Best’s rousing transcription of Meyerbeer’s Coronation March from Le prophète, followed by Sweelinck’s Pavana Lachrimae, a deeply expressive reimagining of a Dowland ayre. From there, the recital journeys through Scheidemann’s ornate Dic nobis Maria, based on a motet by Giovanni Bassano, and Lennox Berkeley’s graceful Andantino, arranged for organ by Jennifer Bate.

Also featured is Mendelssohn’s Prelude and Fugue in E minor, transcribed by W.T. Best, and Elgar’s beloved Chanson de nuit and Chanson de matin in arrangements by Herbert Brewer. The programme concludes with Arno Landmann’s Variations on a Theme of Handel, a witty and inventive work that brings the series to a joyful and virtuosic close.

Don’t miss this chance to hear one of the Cathedral’s own musicians in the splendour of the building’s historic organ.
