The Old Document Reading Group
Thursday 20 November | 6:15pm-7:30pm | The Cathedral Library & Archives Reading Room
This event is now fully booked.
Are you struggling to read old handwriting, but don’t have anyone to turn to for help? Have you become rusty with your palaeographical skills? Do you enjoy word puzzles and deciphering text? Would you like to contribute to improving cataloguing and access to historical materials in the Cathedral Archives?
This friendly Old Document Reading Group will meet to decipher documents from the 16th-20th century (in English) from the Cathedral Archives and collectively prepare transcriptions of the text. Where time allows we will also enjoy looking at small sections of documents in other languages (Latin and Old English), or from outside the Cathedral Archives.
Please note this reading group is not a formal training course, although you will receive help and guidance on how to read handwriting from different eras and in different styles. No experience is necessary – just a willingness to have a go!
