Music for the Exeter Rondels
Friday 15 August 2025 | 2pm | Nave
Enjoy a special performance of Music for the Exeter Rondels by Devon-based composer Sam Richards. This music was inspired by the rondels, the 31 tapestry cushions which have been on either side of the nave of the Cathedral since the 1980s. It is written for three flute players, the Flutecake trio, well-known in Devon for their programmes of classical and popular music. It will be played over more than an hour with the musicians standing alongside each rondel as they play through the 31 miniatures. The current team of stitchers will be in attendance working on their three new rondels.
The Exeter Rondels take the form of a series of embroidered cushions, over seventy metres in length, lining the sides of the nave in Exeter Cathedral. Greater in length than the famous tapestry at Bayeux, the Exeter Rondels are a magnificent achievement, stunning in the brilliance of their design and conception. The Exeter Rondels form a chronological story of national, local and church history. Visitors walking through the nave will follow the main events of the past, told through the words and pictures interwoven on the Rondels.
This event is included in standard Cathedral admission.
