Cathedral Choir

Exeter Cathedral Choir leads around eight services each week during term time, maintaining a tradition that has been largely unbroken for centuries.

The choir is the Cathedral’s flagship professional ensemble and also has a busy programme of other engagements, which often includes tours, concerts, recordings and radio broadcasts.

Choristerships for boys and girls aged 7-13

Up to thirty-eight boy and girl Choristers (aged between 7 and 13 years old) sing in the Cathedral Choir. All attend Exeter Cathedral School.

The children enjoy a broad education alongside a challenging but rewarding life as a Chorister. They are trained to a professional standard to sing alongside the adult members of the choir, benefitting from unparalleled musical training and developing a strong sense of commitment, responsibility, teamwork and social skills.

Voice Trials for potential Choristers usually take place in January each year, but Timothy Noon (Director of Music) is always happy to receive enquiries from parents of potential Choristers.

Choral Scholarships for altos, tenors and basses

Our choral scholarship programme provides exciting opportunities for university-aged singers who are interested in immersing themselves in the life of a professional Cathedral Choir.

Choral Scholars come to Exeter for a gap year immediately before or after university or in conjunction with a degree course at the University of Exeter (scholarships are usually tenable for the duration of the course).

Scholars sing alongside the Choristers and Lay Vicars up to six days a week (there are typically no duties on Saturdays) and are paid a scholarship by the Dean and Chapter that is currently worth c. £3,500.

Former Exeter Scholars have gone on to undergraduate and postgraduate studies at major universities and conservatoires, as well as full-time singing careers with some of the country’s leading ensembles.

Choral Scholarships are usually advertised widely around 10-12 months in advance of the academic year, but Timothy Noon (Director of Music) is always happy to receive enquiries from potential Choral Scholars at any time.
