The Building

Exeter Cathedral’s environmental improvements to the building, as part of the 2020s Development Appeal Project.

The Quire and the East End

  • The 1960s Purbeck stone floor that was removed from the Quire during Exeter Cathedral’s 2020s Devlopment Appeal Project was re-used in the new Friends’ Cloister Gallery
  • Our brand-new Jubilee Pavement was created using only locally-sourced Devon stone
  • The works throughout the Quire and East End of Exeter Cathedral have included the installation of a more efficient underfloor heating system, which will help to reduce our carbon footprint

The Friends’ Cloister Gallery

  • Exeter Cathedral’s newest building, the Friends’ Cloister Gallery, has been made using locally-sourced materials from Somerset and North Dorset
  • Underfloor heating was installed throughout, to improve the efficiency of the heating system
  • The timbers used in the ceiling were remains of timber cut to size for the restoration of Notre-Dame
  • Some of the Friends’ Cloister Gallery floor is made from Purbeck stone slabs that were recycled from the Quire floor of 1963

Swift Boxes

  • In June 2024, Exeter Cathedral worked with Devon Swift Project to install swift boxes in our south tower. The swift boxes will help to support and increase the swift population surrounding the Cathedral by providing a place to nest.
