Remembrance at Exeter Cathedral

Armistice Day & Remembrance Sunday

This weekend, Exeter Cathedral will join cathedrals, churches and communities across the country in remembering the service and sacrifice of all who have lost their lives as a result of conflict or terrorism.

On Saturday at 10.55am, the Dean of Exeter will bless a special Garden of Remembrance on Cathedral Green. The short service will be followed by a two-minute silence at 11am.

Remembrance Sunday at the Cathedral will begin at 10:50am with a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the war memorial on Exeter’s Cathedral Green. This will be followed by a special service inside the Cathedral at 11:45am. The Remembrance Sunday service will be attended by representatives and veterans of the armed forces, as well as Devon’s faith and civic leaders, including Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Devon, Lady Arran. A sermon will be given by the Revd Thomas James, Royal Navy Chaplain from the Royal Marines Commando Training Centre in Lympstone, and a blessing will be given by Acting Bishop of Exeter, the Rt Revd Jackie Searle.

For the Church of England in Devon, this weekend of remembrance is particularly significant as it coincides with a visit to the county by Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Justin Welby. The Archbishop will be in Devon from Friday 10 to Sunday 12 November, to take part in events across the county. His ‘Come and See Mission Weekend’ aims to tell people about the Christian faith, and explain why issues such as rural life, children and young people, caring for our planet and living with loss, matter to Christians.

As part of the ‘Come and See’ weekend, Exeter Cathedral will open its doors to welcome all visitors free of charge on Saturday morning from 9am to 10:50am, offering a free breakfast, an opportunity to explore the famous historic building, and to meet the Cathedral’s clergy, staff and volunteers.
