Welcome to new ‘Prebendaries’

Two more Prebendaries (honourary canons) were installed in Exeter Cathedral at Choral Evensong on 14th November 2017.

Hilary Dawson, Rector of the Holyford Mission Community, and Will Hazelwood, Priest-in-Charge of the United Benefice of Dartmouth and Dittisham, were commissioned by Bishop Robert and installed by members of the Cathedral Chapter.

There are 26 Prebendaries in total, each of whom is a member of the College of Canons of the Cathedral, with their own stall in the quire.   This means that they provide advice to the Cathedral when consulted and have to formally approve the appointment of a new Diocesan Bishop.   Traditionally, a Prebend provided an annual income to supplement that derived from the parochial income. Today, with stipends standardised each new Prebendary is presented with a loaf of bread to symbolise this ancient entitlement.
