College of Canons

The College of Canons supports the work of the Cathedral and a plays a part in its governance.

It consists of the Dean, Suffragan Bishops (and full time, stipendiary Assistant Bishops), the Residentiary Canons, Chapter Canons, Prebendaries (honorary Canons), Canons Theologian, Lay Canons and the Archdeacons.

The College meets at least twice each year and its duties include receiving and considering the annual report and audited account, discussing matters concerning the Cathedral, and giving advice or counsel as requested by the Bishop or the Chapter.

In the event of a vacancy in the See, the College is summoned by the Dean to meet and elect a Bishop, as required by the Appointment of Bishops Act 1533.
