This delightful tour offers a rare opportunity to visit a beautiful, tranquil sanctuary in the center of the city that is not generally open to the public. Your journey begins inside the magnificent Exeter Cathedral with an insider’s look at the architecture, discovering how the building’s design connects directly to the landscapes outside. From there, we’ll stroll around the stunning Cathedral grounds, passing through the medieval Palace Gate to enter the peaceful surroundings of the Bishop’s Palace Garden.

As you explore, you will learn about the Palace itself – the oldest inhabited building in Exeter and still the private home of the Bishop of Exeter, whose predecessors have lived on this site since the 13th century. Strolling along the gravel paths that border the sweeping lawns, you will discover how the garden has been adapted and used over the centuries. Along the way, you’ll encounter plantings nurtured by generations of bishops, including the famous Lucombe Oak, beautiful herbaceous borders and a vibrant wild garden area.

This exclusive experience also grants you a view of the exterior of the Cathedral’s Lady Chapel from the only vantage point in the entire city where it can be seen. As you complete your walk, you will take in a historic section of the city’s Roman wall, enjoy recent horticultural developments, and admire the various constructions, unique sculptures and statues that have been artfully added to this hidden paradise over time.
