Hands on History – What are Archives?

Hands on History – What are Archives?

Thursday 16 April 2026 | 2pm-4pm

What is an archive? Who decides what gets kept? And what stories can be found inside old documents?

If you’re aged 14–18 and curious about history, stories, and how the past connects to the present, this workshop is for you. Have you ever wanted to explore an archive but didn’t know where to start? Or wondered what an archivist actually does all day?

Join us for an interactive afternoon in the Cathedral Archives, where you’ll go behind the scenes to discover how archives work. You’ll get hands-on with original documents, learn how records are preserved, and find out how archives bring history to life for visitors today.

Could you be an archivist? What can archives tell us about people your age in the past? Come along, ask questions, and uncover the stories waiting to be discovered.
Spaces are limited so please get in touch with Ella Barber, Youth Engagement Officer, to express your interest in attending this session. Spaces will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
