Exeter Awarded UNESCO City of Literature Status

The Exeter Book, one of the four major Anglo-Saxon books of literature, donated to the Library of Exeter Cathedral by Leofric, first Bishop of Exeter, in 1072. The Exeter Book was inscribed onto the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in 2016.

“Exeter Cathedral is delighted that the City of Exeter has been awarded World City of Literature status by UNESCO, meaning we have joined the 264-strong family of UNESCO Creative Cities.  Exeter Cathedral’s Library and Archive, in particular the Exeter Book, was a cornerstone of the city’s bid. Exeter City Council’s press release is below.  We are looking forward to the exciting new opportunities this status will open up for us and our neighbours.”

The Revd Canon James Mustard, Canon Precentor
