Four of our choristers starred in #DevonOpera’s recent sparkling performance of Bizet’s Carmen at the Northcott Theatre, Exeter, alongside an impressive professional cast, including Emma Roberts as Carmen and Matthew Curtis as Don José. The performance was directed by acclaimed opera director, Anna Gregory, with a new setting of the score arranged and directed by the composer, Pavel Timofeyevsky.
This is the second year that Exeter Cathedral choristers have brought their enthusiasm, talent and stage presence to the performances of DevonOpera (Last year, it was the performance of La Bohème at the Barnfield Theatre). The Company’s productions offer invaluable experience for our choristers, allowing them to extend their musical skills beyond the Cathedral Choir.
James Mustard (Canon Precentor): “It was a real joy to see our choristers, some of whom have just left the Choir, singing in Carmen. They stole the stage in some of their scenes, acting and singing with aplomb! It’s a reminder that our musical ministry here at Exeter Cathedral really changes lives and equips our young people for all sorts of music-making and performance. It’s also a reminder that Cathedral Music has a reach and impact far beyond our walls”.
Anna Gregory (Director, DevonOpera): “The Cathedral choristers were simply brilliant, talented, musically confident and ready to take on the challenge of acting with singing without compromising their delivery of the language and notes. After Bohème last year we had to have them back as our pick pocketing ragamuffin chorus for Carmen. All four were so impressive and so much fun to direct!”
