Be a Chorister for a Day

Saturday 27 November 2021 | FREE | Advance booking essential

Do you know a child who loves singing?

Exeter Cathedral is hosting a free Chorister open day on Saturday 27 November 2021. This is open to all boys and girls, between the ages of 7 and 9, who enjoy singing. It is a great chance for young people to be encouraged and coached by professional musicians in an inspirational setting.

The children will have a great time with the current Choristers, rehearsing and then singing with them in the Cathedral. In addition they will have a special opportunity to take part in the annual Christingle Service. They will hear all about the Choristers’ daily routine, radio and television broadcasts, recordings and tours, and have the opportunity to ask lots of questions.

No previous experience is required; all are welcome to attend this free day of discovery and information. There is an optional programme for parents so please do attend as much or as little of the day as you would like to.

About the day

Be A Chorister for a Day offers children who love music the chance to sing in Exeter Cathedral with our Choristers. There is no charge to attend the event, and parents are welcome to stay for as little or as much of the day as they would like.

Food and Drink

A light lunch will be served for children at Exeter Cathedral School and further drinks provided later in the day. It would be helpful if you could indicate on the registration form how many will be attending for lunch, together with any dietary requirements.

About Exeter Cathedral Choir

There are 40 Choristers in Exeter Cathedral Choir, including a small number of Probationers (learner Choristers). They enjoy the most remarkable, fulfilling and rewarding musical training, alongside a broad and balanced all-round education at Exeter Cathedral School. For boys and girls who love singing, a Choristership is a very special opportunity to develop all-round musical talent in the context of service in the Cathedral.

Choristerships and Exeter Cathedral School

Founded in the 12th century as a choir school, Exeter Cathedral School is a vibrant independent Prep School which offers an outstanding educational experience to 275 pupils, and is proud to educate the Choristers of Exeter Cathedral. The School’s ancient foundations and location (in the heart of the city yet nestled safely in the lee of the Cathedral) sit harmoniously alongside its traditional values and modern approach, to deliver an education which focuses on developing the whole child.

Traditional Values and Modern Approach
Established for over 900 years, there is a tremendous amount of history, tradition, culture and heritage in the walls and in the blood of ECS. But there is also freshness, dynamism, modern facilities, and a real sense of pride in being an ancient foundation with traditional values and a modern approach – and a place where children can be children.

Choristers enjoy the most remarkable, fulfilling and rewarding musical training, alongside a broad and balanced all-round education at ECS. For boys and girls who love singing, a Choristership is a very special opportunity to develop all-round musical talent in the context of service in the Cathedral.

World-class musical coaching
Choristers receive a Scholarship to attend ECS, awarded by the Dean and Chapter of Exeter Cathedral, and receive the same broad and balanced education as all of ECS’s pupils. They access the full curriculum and all of the other enriching opportunities on offer: with the exception of some after-school clubs and some assemblies, Choristers do not miss out on any part of school life. That said, the School is of course mindful of their busy schedules, and dedicated Chorister Tutors closely oversee the workload and wellbeing of the Choristers.

The ECS Journey
At the age of 13, pupils move on to a range of leading senior schools. The School has a proven record of scholarship success to many senior schools and a number of senior staff are in place to advise families on the next steps. In 2020 and 2021, 84% of the Year 8 leavers secured at least one scholarship at their first-choice senior school. Often, Exeter Cathedral Choristers receive offers of music scholarships/awards to a number of top senior schools.

Admissions enquiries for in-year places and for September 2022 are welcome and further details about the School, the Learning Journey, Creativity & Performance opportunities and ECS’s Mind, Body & Soul programme, as well as enrichment opportunities can be found on the School’s website:
