Book Presentation: Mamerto Gueritz – A Country Catholic by David Gunn-Johnson
Sunday 19 November at 11:45am
Exeter Cathedral Priest Vicar, The Ven. David Gunn-Johnson, has written the story of a rural clergyman from East Devon who, in spite of his secluded ministry, became involved in the national and international movements in the Church of England in his day. Mamerto Gueritz was vicar of Colyton from 1860 to 1902 and his story, and that of his family, is full of adventure. Indeed, he arrived in England as a babe in arms, fleeing with his mother from the turmoils of Spain, landing at Axminster on an orange boat from Seville. Forty years later he returned as incumbent of the parish just along the Coly valley from where he landed.
David says, “I try to be a scholar, but really I am more of a storyteller”. The book will be presented in the Cathedral after the 10am service on Sunday 19 November, at 11:45am. There will be wine served in the retro quire and a presentation in the Lady Chapel. There will also be an opportunity to buy the book and have it signed. Purchases may be made by cash, cheque or bank transfer.
