Bach: St Matthew Passion – CANCELLED

A depiction of the Crucifixion created by Devonshire artist Hilary Goddard, painted while listening to the St Matthew Passion and on display in the Cathedral throughout Lent and Passiontide

JS Bach’s St Matthew Passion is an icon of western art. Written on a grand scale for three choirs, two orchestras and soloists, it has been likened to a gothic cathedral or a baroque palace. In telling Matthew’s version of Jesus’ last meal, trial and execution, it explores themes of freedom, love and liberty, presenting Jesus and asking “Who is this man?”
