School Visits

Over 4,500 pupils visit Exeter Cathedral each year to help enrich and enhance their study of subjects such as RE, History, Art and Music. We welcome groups of all sizes and endeavour to provide a high quality service based on the individual requirements of each group.

Guided tours for school groups

We have a wide range of themed tours on offer for all schools who visit. Our trained guides will tell you about the life, history, and community of the Cathedral, focusing on your chosen topic area which might include signs and symbols, faith in art, medieval history and architecture. They are the ideal way to make the most of your visit and they are devised to complement the curriculum. A guided tour lasts between 45 mins to 1 hour (except for Pilgrimage, Walk the Timeline & Medieval Murder).

Thank you very much for yesterday. The students all really enjoyed it and it was great that they managed to do and learn so much. The workshops had great pace and variety and I think that’s why I feel so tired today!

Interested in something else?

If there’s something you’re interested in that doesn’t appear on our programme then please get in touch, as we may be able to help! In 2018 we have organised several specialised programmes for schools and colleges that link to a programme of study or wider specialised interest. These have included: Shakespeare and links to John Hooker; Investigating inks of the past with quill calligraphy; Roman, Norman and Medieval influences on the Cathedral building and local life during the period; evidence of heritage crafts old and new; myths and legends hidden within our walls.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the tour take?
Tours can take between 45mins to an hour. We can tailor the timing to suit your group’s needs. Activities can work in the same way, lasting approximately 1 hour.

Can your guide tell us some specific information?
We can try to book a guide who has special knowledge on the subject you wish to find out about. We generally offer this to pupils of secondary school age and above, to link with certain themes of work they may be trying to investigate.

Can we have a lunch space?
Due to the capacity of our room space, we are unable to offer you a lunch room for free. We can offer a space, where available, for a charge of £15 for up to 35 pupils for half an hour or £30 per hour. NB. This is package for Cathedral Visitors only. If you would like to use our lunch room and toilets without a Cathedral visit, the room is charged at general room hire rates, which is double the quoted cost.

Where can we park?
There is no coach parking at Exeter Cathedral, although arrangements can be made to accommodate a small minibus for disabled visitors. Please discuss this at the time of booking.

Drop off/pick up points are available in South Street (EX1 1DZ) opposite the cut/walkthrough to the Cathedral next to Connells Estate Agents available at any time.

Parking for coaches is available at Haven Banks Car Park, EX2 8DP.

Please visit the Visit Exeter website for more information about coach parking in the city.
