There were 1,115 men of Devon who fought with Admiral Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar, many more than from any other British county. Their long tradition of experience and expertise as seamen meant they were highly valued by the Royal Navy.
To commemorate them on the Bicentenary of the Battle, the Exeter Flotilla presented a memorial Trafalgar Roll to Exeter Cathedral in 2005. It shows for each man his rank or rate, age, the ship he served in and his Devon birthplace. The Roll is available for examination throughout the year in the Cathedral Library but on Trafalgar Day it can be seen before and after the service beside the pulpit.
All are welcome at this act of worship.
