The Bishops of Exeter Portraits
There is a long tradition of the Bishops of Exeter having a portrait painted for reference to future generations. There are some of the Medieval Bishops recorded in prints, a number in oils of Tudor Bishops, but by far the largest part of the collection are of all the Bishops since the restoration of the Monarchy in the 17th century. These hang mainly in the public areas of the Palace, the entrance hall, on the stairs, the drawing room and the dining room. A few portraits still remain in the West Wing of the Palace that is now part of the Cathedral curtilage. A few portraits are held in storage in the Palace.
The painting is of Bishop Robert seated on one of the Palace chairs (that usually stands in the entrance hall) he is seated partly facing left but his face is looking to the viewer. A very fine likeness of Bishop Robert looking as he does in repose. He is dressed in Convocation Robes (Bishop’s Choir Dress of Rochet and Chimere) and the portrait is to hang on the right hand side of the fire place in the dining room as the pendent portrait to Bishop Levington that hangs to the left so it is a mirror image.
There will be an opportunity to see Bishops Robert’s portrait, painted by the Devon artist Rupert W Brooks in Exeter Cathedral in the St. Gabriel Chapel from Mid-day Thursday 22nd July until Sunday 22nd August during the Cathedral opening times.
