Forms of Service

Weekday and Sunday Choral Evensong

This service uses the Book of Common Prayer Evening Service beginning on Page 19, commencing with the Responses.  The appointed Psalm for the day is sung by the Cathedral Choir.  The Bible readings are that which are appointed for the particular day.  This service takes place in the Quire.  Occasionally at Sunday Evensong, a special service takes place during the service, please consult the music list for information.

Weekday Eucharist Services
(8am daily, 1.15pm on Wednesday and 5.30pm on Saint's Days)

The services at 8.00am on Monday to Saturday, 1.15pm on Wednesday follow the Eucharist service in Common Worship, Order One, except on Sunday, when this service follows the Eucharist order in the Book of Common Prayer, beginning at Page 236.  There is no singing at these services, neither a sermon.  On a Saints Day, there is a Solemn Eucharist at 5.30pm which is sung and involves incense, following the Eucharist service in Common Worship Order One.  The 1.15pm service on Wednesday takes place in the Lady Chapel, the 8.00am service on Sunday takes place in the Quire.  On Monday-Saturday, the service takes place by rotation in a different side chapel every morning.

Sunday Eucharist (9.45am Sundays)

This service follows the Eucharist service in Common Worship, Order One and is a sung service.  There are sung hymns by the choir and congregation, the Eucharist setting is sung by the choir only.  This service is mostly held in the Nave, though it occasionally takes place in the Quire.  This service includes a sermon by a member of the Cathedral clergy, though visiting preachers occasionally carry out this duty, by the invitation of the Dean.

Choral Mattins (11.15am Sundays)

This service uses the Book of Common Prayer Morning Service beginning on Page 4, beginning with the Responses.  The appointed Psalm for the day is sung by the Cathedral Choir.  The Bible readings are that which are appointed for the particular day.  This service takes place in the Quire and includes a sermon by a member of the Cathedral clergy, though visiting preachers may carry out this duty, by invitation of the Dean.  Occasionally, a special service takes place during Choral Mattins, please consult the music list for information.

Morning Prayer (8.30am Monday-Saturday)

This service follows the Daily Prayer Service in Common Worship.  Psalms and readings are that which are appointed for the particular day.  This service takes place in the Lady Chapel.  The service shown above is the standard order, there are seasonal variations on this order.

Evening Prayer
(5pm on Saint's Days, 5.30pm on Wednesday, or when there is no Sung Evensong)

This service follows the Daily Prayer Service in Common Worship. Psalms and readings are that which are appointed for the particular day.  This service takes place in the Lady Chapel.  The service shown above is the standard order, there are seasonal variations on this order.
