Director of Music

Andrew has been Director of Music since 1999. He trained at Worcester Cathedral and Cambridge University and held previous appointments at Gloucester and Guildford Cathedrals.

He is responsible for all aspects of the Cathedral's music, in particular the daily training and direction of the Cathedral Choir. The Choir sings 8 services per week during term time and in addition there are concerts, broadcasts, CD recordings and foreign tours.

Andrew is involved in music for the Diocese through the Royal School of Church Music and the Cathedral's Outreach Project. He gives organ recitals, examines for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and conducts the Exeter Philharmonic Choir.



 

Assistant Director of Music

ddDavid Davies is the Assistant Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral. Originally a native of Snowdonia in North Wales, David was educated at Eton College, Magdalen College, Oxford (where he was organ scholar), and Yale University. He has worked in church music on both sides of the Atlantic, living in the USA for five years, and as Director of the Girls’ Choir and Sub Organist at Guildford Cathedral for six years.

David studied with John Wellingham, Nicolas Kynaston, Martin Jean and Thomas Murray, and has given recitals in South Africa, Japan, North America and several countries in Europe. In the UK he has performed at Westminster Abbey and the Royal Festival Hall and has appeared on numerous radio and television broadcasts.


 

Assistant Organist

tannerStephen Tanner began his musical career as a chorister in the choir of Coventry Cathedral. During the final year of his degree course at the University of Huddersfield, he was appointed organ scholar at Bradford Cathedral.

Appointed Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral School in 1987, Stephen  combines this post with that of Assistant Organist at Exeter Cathedral. He directs the girl choristers’ section of the Cathedral Choir which he founded in 1994. In this capacity he has conducted or played the organ for numerous concerts, broadcasts, recordings and foreign tours. Under his musical leadership, Exeter Cathedral School enjoys a considerable reputation for the breadth and quality of its music making.

He has composed and arranged extensively, in particular for his school musicians and for the Cathedral Choir and he has twice won national composition competitions.

Stephen is Musical Director of the Devon Chorister Outreach Project, a collaboration between the Cathedral Music Department and the Devon Music Service, to promote singing in the counties’ Junior Schools.

In 2008 he founded Isca Voices, a group of former girl choristers from Exeter Cathedral Choir that performs in a wide variety of sacred and secular styles.

He is an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.
