Family history

Registers are only of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials conducted at the Cathedral itself. Chapter minutes, accounts, wages books, estate records and correspondence are worth searching for clergy, choir members, tenants, craftsmen and cathedral staff.

Parish registers, non-conformist and civil registers are in Devon Record Office. There are no surviving pre 1857 Wills for Devon or Cornwall - they were destroyed during World War II.

Domestic Buildings and Local History

Dean and Chapter estates were spread randomly across Devon and Cornwall. Deeds, maps, surveys, rentals and accounts survive from Anglo Saxon times to the mid 19th century, but are by no means complete. As yet there is no guide to the places covered or documents available, apart from the lists and indexes held in the Cathedral Archives. Please enquire, as most material for the south western counties will be in Devon and Cornwall Record Offices. For more details see the Record Office's website.
