Nightchurch
Fresh hope, new life, a different way of seeing: Nightchurch is a venture at the Cathedral with the look of Easter and the smell of Springtime.
To find out more and explore what it means to be part of Nightchurch visit the website or see the display and handouts in the Cathedral. Take the step. Make the journey.
Church for the unchurched: we are hoping to be a home for spiritual searchers who find that traditional church has, for them, become a barrier and not a gateway to the living God. Nightchurch gathers in the Cathedral on Friday nights from 8 - 11 pm, intending to be primarily a way back to God for Generation X and Y (those born after 1960), but is open to all. If it grows, Nightchurch will become another congregation of the Cathedral community who happen to gather together on Fridays and not Sundays. Rooted in the Cathedral's aim to be a centre for worship, teaching and mission, Nightchurch is a joint partnership between the Diocese of Exeter and the Cathedral and will be funded by them and a grant from the St Luke's Foundation in the first 3 years.
Part of Nightchurch is about exploring the best of Christian spirituality whether loud, quiet, silent, in solitude, with hundreds, using formal liturgy or informality, eastern or western, ancient or modern, contemporary, celtic, ignatian, monastic, charismatic or a mixture of some of the above! The mission of Christ also calls us to be his arms and hands in a needy world. So we seek to do the works of Christ with those near and far; clothing the naked, feeding the hungry, bringing reconciliation to the divided, healing the sick and bringing comfort and hope to the broken-hearted and down-trodden (Isaiah 61 and Luke 4: 18-19). With such a beautiful building as the Cathedral, Nightchurch sees a mission to embrace the arts and the artist - to use our creative gifts in our love for the Creator and to fully express what is happening in and around us.
At the heart of Nightchurch is a small community of 12 diverse people, called the Pioneer Team, committed to a year of spiritual and ministerial formation. The pioneer team experience is based on Jesus' ways with his disciples - a sense of calling, friendship, eating together, prayer, coaching, storytelling, engaging with those whom we meet. As well as the Pioneer Team, there is also a team of companions who support this adventure and serve God either with their presence at Nightchurch, advice as critical friends, prayers or financial backing.
