Explore Your Archive
Explore Your Archive is a joint campaign delivered by The National Archives and the Archives and Records Association across the UK and Ireland. It aims to showcase the unique potential of archives to excite people, bring communities together, and tell amazing stories.
Usually held for a week in November, the campaign showcases the phenomenal archival collections held by organisations across the UK and Ireland, whatever their size and scale, and wherever they are.
Music in the Cathedral Library and Archive
Music has always been at the heart of life in the Cathedral, and this is reflected in our Library and Archive collections. From medieval missals to modern scores, and concert programmes to cartoons, music and musicians are there to be discovered in the Dean & Chapter’s collections.
In recent years Archive volunteers have been working hard on our music collections. They are helping to build a database of musicians, and they are indexing the choir part books and the music lists. It’s a work in progress, but we are making access to these resources easier and in the process rediscovering some of the stories within. The slides below are part of a display (digital and a small selection of original items) that was in the Cathedral during November 2015.
