The Chapter House

Work on an administrative building for the dean and chapter started soon after the appointment of the first dean, Serlo, in 1225.

The four-bay rectangular building was completed in the first half of the 13th century and originally had two storeys - the upper one housing the Holdechecker, the original exchequer. In 1413, the upper part of the building was severly damaged by fire, and the whole of this belongs to the 15th century. The magnificent ceiling dates from around 1470. The Cathedral Library was kept in the Chapter House from 1820 until 1887. The modern sculptures in the niches around the walls were executed by Kenneth Carter in 1974.
