Full peal success for visiting band

Saturday 1st April 2017

Congratulations to today's visiting band of ringers from Birmingham, who were successful in their peal attempt at Exeter Cathedral. At 72cwt (over 3.5 tons), the tenor bell at Exeter Cathedral makes this fine peal of bells the second heaviest in the world, behind only Liverpool Cathedral. So especial congratulations to Michael Wilby, who rang the tenor single handed for four hours and twenty seven minutes to achieve this feat of skill and stamina.

For the uninitiated, the ringers do not stop to have a rest, or change bell! Which makes a peal at Exeter Cathedral one of the most challenging and demanding tests of any ringer. The photograph shows the successful band outside the Cathedral - we hope the city enjoyed the sound of the glorious bells throughout the sunshine and showers of this, the first day of April!
