Ian Morter was born in Walthamstow North East London. On leaving school he worked in International Banking in the City of London for four years. During this time he explored his vocation to the ordained ministry. He read theology at Kings College, London and went on to The College of the Resurrection, Mirfield to complete his full time training. Ian was ordained in 1978 in the Chelmsford Diocese to a parish in Colchester in North-East Essex. In 1982, he moved to Devon and has served in parishes in Brixham, Sidmouth, Exminster & Kenn and until 2010 in Exmouth & Lympstone.
As one of the Commissioner Canons he has a full-time ministry within the Cathedral. As Canon Pastor he has a responsibility for the pastoral care of the Cathedral community, the regular congregation, the staff and the many volunteers that give of their time and talents in service to the community - these include the stewards and guides, the flower arrangers and the tapisers etc. Baptisms and marriage enquiries for the Cathedral often come my way. As a member of Chapter, he holds the portfolio for Visitor Services and work closely with the head of that department as well as the café and bookshop. As one of the three whole-time members of the Chapter he is involved in a fair amount of the day to day running of the Cathedral.
Canon Morter has two grown up children still living at home and his interests include swimming, sailing, cooking, art, music and travel.
