£1 Million Library & Archives Appeal

The Cathedral library and archives contain irreplaceable treasures of national and international significance from the 10th century onwards, including the 10th century Exeter Book of Anglo Saxon poetry, the Exon Domesday, and the Cathedral's Charter (signed by Edward the Confessor).

Both library and archives are open to the public and to scholars. Currently both departments are restricted severely both in terms of space and the times at which they are able to be staffed. This means we are limited in our ability to exhibit books, documents, and artefacts for visitors. It also means that these items of historical importance are housed in less than ideal conservation and preservation conditions. We are seeking £1 million to begin the work to assure the future of the library and archives. It will enable us to store and display items in the correct environment, improve access and educational facilities, and develop the library and archives into an outstanding centre for conservation, interpretation, study and exhibitions for generations to come.
