Adopt a stone

As the largest church building in the South West, Exeter Cathedral has stood for centuries.

Time and the elements have, however, taken their toll. The long-term future of this glorious example of gothic architecture depends upon a continuous programme of repair and renovation. As part of a continuous programme of repair and renovation, the cathedral stonemasons have now started work on the east elevation of the Cathedral. The Lady Chapel requires a number of new stones and repairs. 

To support the £47,000 needed, the Campaign is launching an appeal to 'Adopt a Stone'. By adopting an existing stone you will help to provide an income towards the cost of replacing damaged stones. Each stone adopted is recorded as part of the Cathedral's permanent archive, and each adoptee receives a certificate and an architectural diagram showing their specific stone.

There are a variety of stones to be adopted:

• a block of stone for a gift of £25;
• a carved buttress stone for a gift of £50;
• a carved window hood, mullion or sill stone for a gift of £125;
• a pinnacle, or piece of window tracery for a gift of £250.

We are sure that you will agree that this is a wonderful way to raise funds for the Lady Chapel renovation project. The 'Adopt a Stone' scheme allows you to purchase a gift which is a little bit different, either for yourself or for someone else. Previously we have had stones adopted in celebration of birthdays, christenings, graduations, as birthday and Christmas presents, in memory of a departed loved one, or simply to say thank you. If you would like to support the scheme and adopt a stone of your own, please contact the Campaign office or download an adoption form here.
