Ian Morter was born in Walthamstow North East London. On leaving school he worked in International Banking in the City ofLondonfor four years. During this time he explored his vocation to the ordained ministry. He read theology atKingsCollege,Londonand went on to The College of the Resurrection, Mirfield to complete his full time training. Ian was ordained in 1978 in the Chelmsford Diocese to a parish in Colchester inNorth-East Essex. In 1982, he moved toDevonand has served in parishes in Brixham, Sidmouth, Exminster & Kenn and until 2010 in Exmouth & Lympstone.
As one of the Commissioner Canons he has a full-time ministry within the Cathedral. As Canon Pastor he has a responsibility for the pastoral care of the Cathedral community, the regular congregation, the staff and some of the many volunteers that give of their time and talents in service to the community - these include the the flower arrangers and the tapisers. Baptisms and marriage enquiries for the Cathedral often come his way.
Canon Morter has two grown up children still living at home and his interests include swimming, sailing, cooking, art, music and travel.
