Devon has over 500 parish churches: most of therm have towers, and in the towers, turrets and bell-cotes, and in many secular buildings, are over 3,000 bells. The last survey of these bells was published in 1867; since there have been many changes, and much has been discovered about the towers, the builders, the bell-founders and the makers of the church clocks.
Now here is a new survey, with a description of each of Devon's towers, the diameters, weights, inscriptions, dates and founders' bells, and the clocks which count the hours in many of them There are histories of the bell-foundries which throve in Devon for over 400 years and the men who worked them, the bell-hangers and bell-ringers, and the makers of the clocks, with extracts from parish records from the 15th century onwards. The three people who have compiled the book all serve or have served as Bell Consultants in the Diocese of Exeter.
The book, in two volumes, includes over 300 illusttations. (245mm x 280mm)
