 Chapter House

2007 - 2008 Season

The Chapter House dates from 1225 when Bishop Brewer (1224-1244) gave part of his garden for its construction at the same time as appointing Serlo to be the first Dean of the Cathedral. The site of Serlo's grave under the Chapter House is marked by a cross in the stone floor a few feet from the West Door.

The arcades on the north and south sides of the lower part of the Chapter House are in the Early English style and date from the time of Bishop Brewer. It appears that a fire in 1413 destroyed the upper part of the Chapter House. The damage was partly rebuilt by Bishop Lacy (1420-1455), with the magnificent roof finally being completed by Bishop Bothe (1465-1478).

The thirteenth century niches are occupied by fibreglass sculptures made by Kenneth Carter in 1974 on the theme of the Creation.

The Chapter House is the new venue for the series of concerts previously given in the Great Hall of the Deanery. In the popular tradition of Deanery Concerts, refreshments will be served during the interval in the Chapter House.
