THE DEAN & CHAPTER OF THE CATHEDRAL CHURCH OF SAINT PETER IN EXETER

An Exempt, Ecclesiastical Charity

This is the statutory title of the corporation of 24 Prebendaries [Canons] which holds the Cathedral, but whose administrative powers are permanently delegated to the Chapter, consisting of the Dean and three Residentiary Canons. The Chapter has sole responsibility for all aspects of Cathedral life. The Trusts provide essential financial support but do not relieve the Chapter of responsibilty. Average annual expenditure is £800,000. Income from the Church Commissioners is about £100,000, leaving £700,000 to be found each year by the Chapter.

LEGACIES, DEVISES & BEQUESTS

A LEGACY is normally a specific sum of money given by Will, whereas a DEVISE relates to a gift of real property and a BEQUEST to a gift of personal property.

There are four ways of making a Legacy, Devise or Bequest to the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter in Exeter or The Friends of Exeter Cathedral or to one of the Cathedral Trusts:

HOW TO HELP

You can help the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter in Exeter to maintain choral worship and the magnificent building by including one of these Charities in your Will. All these are Exempt or Registered Charities and are exempt from Inheritance Tax. The gift of a Legacy, Devise or Bequest to one of them may reduce the amount of tax to be paid from your Estate. Discuss the possibilities with your Solicitor, Accountant or Bank Manager. If you have already made a Will it may not be necessary to draw up a new one, your existing Will can be amended by a simple Codicil. The following wording could be used:

A PECUNIARY LEGACY

I give the sum of £ ......... [in figures and words] to the ............ [Trust] and I direct that the receipt of the Honorary Treasurer, or other official authorised for the time being, shall be a sufficient discharge to my executors.

A RESIDUARY BEQUEST

I give the whole [or a .......share] of the residue of my estate to the .................. [Trust] and I direct that the receipt of the Honorary Treasurer, or other official authorised for the time being, shall be a sufficient discharge to my executors.
