Who are The Friends?

The Friends were founded in 1929 to co-operate with the Dean and Chapter in helping to preserve and improve the fabric and furnishings of this wonderful building, with its music and its archives, and so maintaining the long tradition of worship and praise for years to come.

There are nearly three thousand Friends from all over the world.

Members receive a January Newsletter and an Annual Report in May which, in addition to articles of particular interest relating to the Cathedral, includes details of the Friends' Festival. The names of all Friends are recorded in the permanent Roll Book which is displayed in the Cathedral.

Annual Report

The Annual Report, a booklet of some 36 pages printed in colour, is published each May.

The seventy-seventh report published in May 2008 contained the following:

The Annual Report for 2008 contains many colour plates. The front cover illustration is from a photograph by Canon Carl Turner, which is reproduced here:

Legacies

The Friends are devoted to the long term upkeep of the Cathedral Church of St Peter in Exeter. They depend on the growth in their funds to a large extent on legacies from all well-wishers who share their outlook. Legacies are invested to secure income which may grow to meet the ever rising cost of repairs and maintenance.

Donors can ensure their gifts are secured for these purposes by contributing specifically to the Fabric Fund which is a permanent endowment for the preservation of the Cathedral building and the permanent contents such as the Organ and the Bishop’s Throne.

Any further details required can be obtained on application to the Hon. Secretary.
